Sur le pont de lancement des bateaux de sauvetage du «Geo Barents», un jeune homme fond en larmes, sa tête entre ses mains. À coté de lui, Christine, psychologue MSF à bord du bateau «Geo Barents», tente de le réconforter «nous sommes là avec toi Mohammed, nous ne pouvons imaginer ta peine, mais nous serons là pour toi, pour t’aider, tu n’es pas seul». Mohammed est un jeune Guinéen. Il vient d’identifier son frère, mort lors de leur traversée de la Méditerranée quelques heures plus tôt. Les deux frères ont risqué leur vie dans l’espoir d’un futur où la pauvreté, la violence et la torture ne serait «plus que» de mauvais souvenirs.
Le nombre de morts dans la Méditerranée a déjà atteint plus de 1300 personnes en 2021. « Médecins Sans Frontières » à bord du bateau « Geo Barents » fait partie de ces organisations qui se battent pour sauver des femmes, des enfants et des hommes qui tentent leur dernière chance vers un meilleur avenir. Tous n’avaient pas encore cette intention lors de leur arrivé en Libye. C’était pour y travailler. Mais la réalité leur ont fait prendre une autre alternative face à l’enfer de ce pays et ses centres de détentions.
Le « Geo Barents » a débuté ses opérations de « Search and Rescue » (Recherche et Sauvetage) au mois de mai 2021 et a depuis lors porté secours à 1345 personnes (décembre 2021). Les membres de ces missions sont des femmes et des hommes passionnés et dédiés à répondre à une crise humanitaire sans précédent.

L’Europe, quant à elle, finance les gardes côtes libyens pour réduire les flux migratoires vers la Sicile et les territoires européens en sachant que les migrants, une fois arrêtés par ces mêmes gardes côtes, sont renvoyés vers des centres de détentions où ils subissent systématiquement violence, tortures et viols. Ibrahim, Adara, Myriam, Moustafa et une centaine d’autres migrants sont arrivés en Italie vivants, ce qui n’a pas été le cas de 10 de leurs amis, frères ou neveux morts par suffocation dans le fond d’une barque qui transportait 99 personnes au départ de la Libye. « Quand nous avons récupéré les corps, on s’est rendu compte que ces personnes étaient très jeunes et qu’ils sont comme vous, comme moi, ils sont nous ! Mais avec plus de problèmes dans leur propre pays » témoigne Riccardo Gati, membre et leader de l’équipe de recherche et sauvetage de MSF sur le «Geo Barents».

En moins de 24 heures, les 15 et 16 novembre 2021, l’équipe MSF a effectué trois sauvetages dans les zones de recherche et de sauvetage de Malte et de la Libye. Cent quatre-vingts-six personnes ont été amenées en sécurité à bord du «Geo Barents». Parmi les survivants, 152 hommes et 34 femmes, dont 61 mineurs ; le plus jeune n’avait que 10 mois.
« Les secourir, c’est leur donner la chance d’avoir une autre vie, mais on sait qu’ils affronteront d’autres frontières, ce sont peut être des frontières (inter)nationales, des frontières physiques, des frontières sanitaires,…Ce n’est que le début de leur parcours» raconte Fulvia, membre de l’équipe MSF de recherche et sauvetage . Malgré les difficultés, les membres de l’équipe MSF, l’équipage maritime ainsi que que les rescapés ne faisaient plus qu’une seule équipe pour faire du «Geo Barents» un endroit sécurisé et solidaire. « Sur le navire, tout le monde se fait confiance, il y a toujours cette volonté d’être ensemble et de se sentir en sécurité. C’est quelque chose de très spécial, propre au monde humanitaire en mer » confie Yanna, technicienne SAR MSF.
